Heavy vs light

Vocal weight is how thick and buzzy a voice sounds compared with how soft and light. A heavy voice is like a big brass instrument; a light voice is more like a flute. Reducing weight is one of the most important (and most overlooked) parts of feminising a voice - a high pitch with heavy weight usually still sounds masculine, and it’s tiring to keep up.

The goal is light but clear, not breathy, not a whisper, not falsetto.

The exercises

Do these after a warm-up, quietly, and only as long as they feel easy.

  1. The airy sigh. Sigh out on “haaa” with lots of air, like you’re relieved. Then gradually let a little more tone in until it’s a soft, clear “ah”. That’s a light voice - notice how little effort it takes.
  2. “Baby voice” / cartoon voice. Say “hiii!” like you’re greeting a puppy or a baby. It’s silly on purpose: it shows you what very light feels like. Then slowly bring it towards a natural speaking sound while keeping some of that lightness.
  3. Light-to-heavy dial. Count from one to five, starting as light as possible and getting gradually heavier. Then go back from heavy to light. You’re learning that weight is a dial, not a switch.
  4. Hold it through a phrase. Pick a phrase like “Would you like a cup of tea?” and keep the same lightness all the way to the end. Many people start light and “drop” into heaviness on the last word - listen for it.

Be patient

Weight is subtle. It might take weeks before you can reliably hear the difference in your recordings, let alone control it in conversation. Every short session is building the muscle memory.
