Finding Your Resonance
Watch a voice coach demonstrate resonance (size), then explore brightening your own voice - gently.
What to listen for
Resonance is the hardest ingredient to hear at first, because weโre used to noticing pitch. Donโt worry if it takes a few listens. Youโre training your ears as much as your voice.
A gentle first exploration
Try this after watching. Keep everything quiet and easy:
- Whisper โeeeโ. Notice how your tongue is high and forward. Now whisper โoooโ - the space gets bigger and darker. Slide between them and listen to the whispered sound brighten and darken.
- Find the โsmall dogโ. Pant gently like a tiny dog, then like a big dog. Feel your larynx rise for the small dog. Big dog = big space; small dog = small space.
- Keep the small space, add a little hum. Hold the โsmall dogโ feeling and add a light โmmmโ or โeeeโ. Donโt push the pitch up - let it sit wherever it lands.
- Try a word. โHelloโ, โmeโ, โsee youโ. Record yourself and compare with your normal voice.
