What’s a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothes that all work together, so almost any top goes with almost any bottom. The magic is in the maths: 5 tops Γ— 3 bottoms Γ— 2 layers = 30 outfits from just 10 pieces.

It’s especially brilliant if you’re building a wardrobe from scratch - instead of buying random bits that don’t go together, every piece earns its place. It’s also kinder to your budget and your wardrobe space.

The recipe

  1. Start with your life. What do you actually do in a week? Work, uni, gym, errands, nights out? Your capsule should mostly match your real days, not a fantasy life of galas.
  2. Pick 2–3 neutrals. These are your base: black, navy, grey, camel, cream, white, olive, denim. Choose ones that suit your colouring.
  3. Add 1–3 accent colours from your season palette - they go on tops, scarves and accessories.
  4. Choose shapes that suit you. Use what you learnt about fit and proportions.
  5. Plan the pieces with the planner (tops, bottoms, dresses, layers and shoes) and watch the outfit count grow.
  6. Fill gaps slowly. Shop what you own first, then second-hand, then new.

Make it yours

A capsule doesn’t have to be beige minimalism! A capsule can be all pastels, all black-and-leopard, or full cottagecore. The only rule is that the pieces mix.
