Why second-hand is a superpower

Second-hand shopping is cheaper, kinder to the planet, and the perfect lab for experimenting. A $6 skirt that turns out not to be โ€œyouโ€ is a lesson, not a loss. Op shops (charity shops) like Salvos, Vinnies, Red Cross and local church shops are full of good-quality, already-washed clothes, and many sort racks by size and colour.

Before you go

  • Know your numbers. Bring your measurements or a tape measure. Sizes in op shops come from every brand and decade (vintage sizes run small - a vintage 14 can be a modern 10).
  • Set a budget and maybe a small list (โ€œblack trousers, a cardigan, anything in my coloursโ€).
  • Wear an easy outfit - a fitted tank or slip and slip-on shoes make try-ons quick. Leggings let you try skirts on over the top.

In the shop: the smart-shopper checks

  1. Feel the fabric first. Run your hand along the rack - linen, wool, silk and good cotton feel different from thin polyester. Then read the label for fibre content.
  2. Check the danger zones: armpits (stains), seams (splitting), zips (working?), pilling (little bobbles), and holes, especially on knits.
  3. Hold it up to yourself. Measure armpit-to-armpit on a top and double it - compare to your bust.
  4. Look for good bones. Lined, well-sewn pieces from quality fabric are worth more than trendy labels.
  5. Hem too long? Waist too big? Small fixes are cheap. Shoulders and too-small are not.

Shopping smart anywhere (new or old)

  • Cost per wear = price รท times worn. A $90 coat worn 100 times beats a $15 top worn once.
  • The 3-outfit rule: if you canโ€™t picture three outfits with it using things you already own, think twice.
  • Wait 24 hours on bigger purchases. Still thinking about it tomorrow? Go back.
  • Check return policies before you buy, especially online and at sale time.

About change rooms

You are entitled to use the change room that matches who you are. Most staff couldnโ€™t care less - theyโ€™re busy! But if it ever doesnโ€™t feel right, itโ€™s absolutely fine to hold things up to a mirror, try a stretchy piece over your clothes, or buy and try at home (check the return policy). Your comfort comes first.
