Settle in
A relaxed voice starts with a relaxed body. When weβre nervous or tense, we tend to breathe high in the chest, lift our shoulders and tighten our throat, and our voice tightens with it.
Follow the bubble for a few rounds:
- Sit or stand tall but soft. Feet flat, shoulders down and back, jaw loose, tongue resting.
- Breathe low. Let your belly and the sides of your ribs widen as the bubble grows. Your shoulders should barely move.
- Breathe out slowly, as if youβre fogging up a mirror very gently.
Then add a little sound
After four or five calm rounds, try one of these on your out-breath:
- A soft βmmmβ hum - notice the gentle buzz on your lips and nose.
- A lip trill (βbrrrβ), letting your lips flutter like a motorboat.
- A sleepy βahhβ sigh that slides from a little higher to a little lower.
