Your voice has a tune
Intonation is the melody your pitch makes as you talk - rising, falling, swooping and pausing. It’s how listeners hear whether you’re asking or telling, delighted or bored, joking or serious. It carries a huge amount of meaning, often more than the words themselves.
Everyone uses intonation, whatever their voice. Speakers who use a wider, more varied melody tend to sound more engaged, warm and expressive. In English, that kind of lively, varied intonation is also often heard as feminine-coded - one more reason it’s worth playing with if you’re training your voice.
How to practise
- Read a children’s picture book out loud. They’re written to be performed! Exaggerate the melody, then dial it back to something natural.
- Copy a voice you love. Pick a podcast host or YouTuber and repeat a sentence straight after them, matching their tune.
- Use “smile-voice”. A gentle smile genuinely changes your sound and makes your melody brighter.
