Hair Removal, All the Options
Shaving, creams, waxing, epilators, IPL, laser and electrolysis - what each one is, how long it lasts, what it costs and who it suits.
There’s no “right” amount of hair
Some women remove lots of hair, some remove none, most land somewhere in between, and it can change with seasons, moods and budgets. This seed is just a map of the options so you can choose what suits your skin, hair, time and wallet.
Temporary: off the surface
Shaving - cuts hair at the skin’s surface.
- Lasts: 1–3 days. Cost: very low. Pain: none.
- Great for: everything, any time. Downsides: stubble, shadow on darker/coarser hair, razor bumps.
Trimming / electric shavers - leaves a tiny bit of length.
- Lasts: a day or so. Gentle on bump-prone skin. Great for a quick tidy.
Depilatory (hair removal) creams - dissolve the hair just below the surface.
- Lasts: a few days to a week. Cost: low. Pain: none, but can sting or burn.
- Always patch test first, follow the timing exactly, and use face-specific formulas on faces.
Temporary: from the root
Waxing and sugaring - pull hair out from the root.
- Lasts: 3–6 weeks. Cost: moderate at a salon, cheaper at home. Pain: a sharp sting that eases with regular sessions.
- Hair needs to be about 5 mm long (grain-of-rice length), so you have a short stubbly phase between appointments.
- Avoid waxing over skin treated with retinoids or strong acids - it can lift the skin.
Epilators - a handheld gadget with tiny tweezers that pull out many hairs at once.
- Lasts: 2–4 weeks. Cost: a one-off $50–$150ish. Pain: ouch at first, less over time.
- Good for legs and arms; tricky on faces and sensitive areas for many people.
Threading and tweezing - removing small areas of hair (brows, upper lip, stray hairs). Cheap and precise.
Long-term reduction and permanent removal
Laser hair removal - a clinic laser targets the pigment (melanin) in the hair to damage the follicle.
- Results: long-term reduction, often 70–90% over a course, with occasional top-ups.
- Sessions: usually 6–10+, about 4–8 weeks apart. Large areas are quick.
- Works best on dark hair. It doesn’t work on white, grey, light blonde or red hair. Modern lasers (such as Nd:YAG) can safely treat darker skin tones - make sure your clinic has the right one and experience with your skin.
IPL (intense pulsed light) - a broad flash of light, used in some salons and in at-home devices.
- Similar idea to laser but less targeted and usually weaker. At-home IPL can be a budget-friendly way to keep regrowth down, especially on legs and underarms.
- Same limits: needs dark hair and isn’t suitable for every skin tone - read the device’s skin-tone chart carefully.
Electrolysis - a trained electrologist puts a fine probe into each follicle and uses a tiny current to destroy it.
- Results: the only method recognised as permanent hair removal.
- Works on every hair colour and skin tone, including grey and blonde hairs that laser misses.
- Slow and can be uncomfortable: one hair at a time means many hours over months (often longer for full faces). Many people do laser first to thin things out, then electrolysis for what’s left.
