Boundaries are a muscle
Nobody wakes up brilliant at saying no. It’s like a muscle: it gets stronger with small, regular reps. The idea here is to practise in low-stakes moments so that when a bigger moment comes, the words are already in your mouth.
Low-stakes practice ideas
- The checkout asks if you’d like to add a donation, a bag, or sign up to a loyalty card: “Not today, thanks!”
- A salesperson offers to help: “I’m just looking, thank you.”
- A friend suggests a film you don’t fancy: “I’m not feeling that one - what about something else?”
- Your coffee comes out wrong: “Sorry, I asked for oat milk - could you remake it?”
- A colleague asks you to take on an extra task: “I can’t fit that in this week.”
Your no-phrase kit
Pick two or three that sound like you and practise them until they feel natural:
| Situation | Try |
|---|---|
| Offers & upsells | “No thanks!” |
| Invitations | “I can’t make it, but thanks for asking!” |
| Physical contact | “I’m not a hugger - high five?” |
| Personal questions | “I’d rather not get into that.” |
| Being pushed | “I’ve already answered.” |
| Leaving | “I’m heading off now - bye!” |
A confident yes counts too
Boundaries aren’t only about no. Saying yes to yourself (leaving early because you’re tired, taking the seat you want, asking for the window table) is the same muscle. Count those wins too.
