Your pocket-sized calm
Slow breathing is one of the quickest ways to tell your body βweβre safe, you can soften nowβ. When you breathe out slowly, your heart rate naturally eases a little, which is why a long sigh feels so good.
Try it now:
- Sit or stand comfortably. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears.
- Follow the bubble: breathe in as it grows, hold gently, breathe out slowly as it shrinks.
- Do at least five rounds. Notice how you feel afterwards, even a tiny shift counts.
Box breathing (in 4, hold 4, out 4, hold 4) is great before something nerve-racking: a phone call, a date, walking into a new place. 4-7-8 breathing (in 4, hold 7, out 8) has a longer out-breath and many people find it helps them wind down at night.
