Jewellery 101
Metals, necklace lengths, ring sizes, earrings without piercings and how to wear jewellery that feels like *you*.
Jewellery is the easiest “femme” switch
A necklace, a pair of earrings or a ring takes ten seconds to put on and instantly changes how an outfit reads. Jewellery is also wonderfully low-commitment: it’s cheap to experiment with, it fits every body, and nobody needs to know your size for a necklace.
The metals, decoded
| Label | What it means | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Sterling silver (925) | 92.5% real silver | Can tarnish (darken) - a polishing cloth fixes it |
| Solid gold (9k, 14k, 18k) | Real gold mixed with other metals; higher k = more gold | Lasts forever, costs the most |
| Gold vermeil | Thick gold layer over sterling silver | A sweet spot between price and quality |
| Gold plated / gold tone | A very thin gold layer over base metal | Cheap and cheerful; wears off with water and time |
| Stainless steel / titanium | Tough, non-tarnish, usually skin-friendly | Brilliant budget pick for everyday and sensitive skin |
| “Fashion” / base metal | Mixed metals, often with nickel | Fun for occasional wear; can irritate some skin |
Gold or silver?
You may hear “warm undertones suit gold, cool undertones suit silver”. It’s a nice starting point (you’ll meet undertones in the makeup bed), but honestly - wear what you love. Mixing metals is completely fine and very current. A simple trick: repeat each metal at least twice (say, a gold ring and gold earrings with a silver watch) so it looks intentional.
Necklace lengths
| Length | Name | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| 35–40 cm | Choker / collar | Around the base of the neck |
| 40–45 cm | Princess | Just on the collarbones - the most versatile |
| 50–60 cm | Matinee | Just above the bust; lovely over crew necks |
| 70–90 cm | Opera / rope | Long and drapey; can be doubled up |
Pair lengths with necklines: V-necks love a pendant that echoes the V; crew necks suit a longer chain or a choker; strapless and off-shoulder tops show off a princess length. If you’d like to soften the look of a broader neck or shoulders, a longer chain with a pendant draws the eye down and creates a vertical line, but if you love chokers, wear the chokers!

Earrings - pierced or not
- Studs - small and close to the ear. The everyday classic.
- Huggies - tiny hoops that “hug” the earlobe.
- Hoops - any size. Small hoops are daily-wear; big hoops are a statement.
- Drops and danglies - hang below the lobe; great for elongating the face and catching light.
- Clip-ons and magnetic earrings - no piercing needed! Look for padded clips for comfort.
- Ear cuffs - hug the curve of the outer ear, no piercing needed.
Getting pierced? Go to a professional piercer or a reputable pharmacy/jeweller that uses a single-use needle or sterile system, choose an implant-grade titanium or surgical steel starter stud, and follow their aftercare. Expect lobes to need about 6–8 weeks before you change the studs.
Rings
- Australia and the UK use letter sizes (J, K, L…); the US uses numbers; Europe uses the inside circumference in mm. Many jewellers will measure you for free, or you can buy a cheap plastic ring sizer online.
- Fingers swell when you’re warm and shrink in the cold - measure at room temperature, late in the day.
- Larger ring sizes exist! If high-street rings don’t fit, try adjustable/open rings, men’s-range bands styled femininely, or makers on Etsy who size to order.
- Wear rings on any finger. Stacking several thin bands, or one bold cocktail ring, are both fun.
Bracelets and watches
A delicate chain, a few bangles, a beaded stretch bracelet or a slim watch all draw attention to wrists. If your wrists are larger, look for extender chains or adjustable sliding bracelets - many brands sell them cheaply.
Building a tiny starter collection
You honestly only need:
- A pair of small studs or huggies you can sleep in and forget about.
- A fine chain with or without a small pendant, princess length.
- One “fun” piece - big hoops, a colourful beaded bracelet, a statement ring.
High-street accessory chains (Lovisa, Accessorize, Claire’s, Primark, Target) sell all three for pocket money; op shops and charity shops are full of treasure, too.
