Hands that talk

Hands are one of the most expressive parts of the body. Stereotypically masculine gestures tend to be big, firm and from the shoulder (pointing, chopping, fists); stereotypically feminine gestures tend to be softer, rounder and closer to the body. You can borrow from either side whenever you like, but here’s the feminine toolkit.

Soft wrists, loose fingers

  • Let your wrists bend a little rather than holding them rigid.
  • Keep your fingers relaxed and slightly together, not splayed or clenched.
  • Gesture from the elbow or wrist, not the whole arm.
  • Palms up or sideways feels open and inviting; palms down or pointing can feel commanding.

Little touches

These are very common, natural “self-touch” gestures - you’ll start noticing them everywhere:

  • Tucking hair behind your ear.
  • Touching your collarbone or necklace while listening.
  • A hand on your chest when laughing or saying “aww”.
  • Resting your chin lightly on the back of your hand.
  • A light touch on a friend’s arm when something’s funny (with people you know well and who are comfortable with it).

Holding things

Hold a cup with your fingers around the handle or with both hands cradling it. Carry a bag in the crook of your elbow or on your shoulder. Hold your phone with soft fingers. Small, unhurried movements look graceful.

The face

Feminine expressiveness is often about showing you’re engaged. That doesn’t mean constant smiling - nobody should have to smile on command. It means letting your face move.

  • Eyebrows: a little lift when you’re interested, surprised or asking a question.
  • Eyes: a softer gaze; warm eye contact with breaks, rather than a fixed stare.
  • Nodding and small “mm-hmm” faces while listening.
  • A relaxed jaw: lots of people clench without realising, which makes the whole face look tense.
  • A genuine smile reaches the eyes. Think of something you love, and it’ll show.

Mirror practice

Sit in front of a mirror (or your phone’s front camera) and tell yourself a little story about your day out loud. Watch your hands and face. Try:

  1. Once with your hands in your lap.
  2. Once letting them move freely but softly.
  3. Once exaggerating your eyebrows and smile, just for fun.

Somewhere between 2 and 3 is usually a lovely, natural sweet spot.
