Depth vs undertone
Every foundation shade describes two things:
- Depth - how light or deep your skin is (fair, light, medium, tan, deep, rich).
- Undertone - the colour underneath: cool (pink, red or bluish), warm (yellow, peachy, golden), neutral (a balance), or olive (a greenish-grey cast, common in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, South Asian and Latin American skin).
Most โwrong shadeโ moments arenโt about depth - theyโre about undertone. A too-pink foundation looks flushed or โmaskyโ; a too-yellow one looks sallow; a non-olive shade on olive skin can look ashy or orange.
Using the tool
Answer the questions in natural daylight, with a clean face if you can. Youโll look at your wrist veins, how you react to sun, whether gold or silver jewellery flatters you more, and how white vs cream fabric looks next to your face. No single test is perfect - the tool weighs them all together.
