Wigs, Toppers & Extensions
Extra hair is for everyone - for fun, for thinning or hairline worries, or while you grow. Here's how to choose.
Extra hair is completely normal
Celebrities, drag queens, cancer patients, women with alopecia, women going through menopause, busy mums, trans women, cosplayers, and people who just fancy being a redhead on Friday - millions of people wear extra hair. Many of the “perfect” heads of hair you see on TV and Instagram have help.
There are three main options.
1. Wigs - a full head of hair
| synthetic | human hair | |
|---|---|---|
| price | $30–$300 | $300–$2000+ |
| styling | holds its style after washing; most can’t take heat (unless labelled “heat-friendly”) | styled just like your own hair, can be coloured |
| upkeep | low (wash every 10–15 wears | higher) needs conditioning and styling |
| lifespan | 3–6 months of daily wear | a year or more |
Cap types, from cheapest to most natural:
- Basic/wefted cap - rows of hair sewn on. Cheap and breathable, but the parting can look less realistic.
- Lace front - fine lace along the hairline, with hairs tied in by hand so the front looks like it’s growing from your skin. The most popular choice.
- Monofilament top - a natural-looking parting you can move.
- Full lace - the most versatile and the most expensive.
Fitting
Measure around your head along your hairline (most adults are 54–58 cm; “average” caps fit around 55–56 cm, and “large” caps exist - lots of brands sell them). Wear a wig cap underneath to hold your own hair flat, and use the adjustable straps inside. Glue and tape are optional; most people wear wigs with just a cap and grips.
2. Toppers - extra hair just on top
A topper (or “hair piece”) clips into your own hair to add volume or coverage on the crown, parting or front hairline. It’s perfect if:
- your hair is thinning on top or your parting is widening,
- your hairline is higher or receded at the front, but you have hair at the sides and back,
- you want something lighter and cooler than a full wig.
Your own hair at the sides blends with the topper, so a good colour match matters. The topper videos above show how to clip one in securely.
3. Extensions - extra length or thickness
Extensions attach to your existing hair: clip-ins (removable, beginner-friendly, from about $50), tape-ins, sew-ins and micro-links (fitted by a stylist and lasting weeks). They need enough of your own hair to hide the attachments (usually at least chin length) so they’re a great way to skip part of the growing-out wait.
Where to shop
Start cheap. A synthetic wig from a reputable online wig shop, a costume/beauty supply store, or even a well-reviewed marketplace listing is a low-risk way to learn what length, colour and cap style you like. Specialist wig salons can also fit, cut and style a wig for you - many offer free consultations, and some work specifically with people experiencing hair loss.
Wearing it with confidence
Your wig is your hair. You don’t owe anyone an explanation. Many women name their wigs, swap them like outfits, and keep a “lazy day” ponytail wig on the stand. Have fun with it. 💁♀️
