Texting has its own tone of voice
In person, we hear tone and see faces. In texts, all of that gets squeezed into punctuation, length, emoji and timing, so the same words can land very differently.
Some common patterns
- Exclamation marks = warmth. βThanks!β feels friendlier than βThanks.β Many people use them freely in casual texts.
- A full stop on a short reply can read as serious or annoyed, especially to younger people. In longer messages, itβs just punctuation.
- Laughter scales. βhahaβ is polite; βhahahaβ or βπβ is genuinely amused; βlolβ is often just a softener.
- Kisses and hearts (x, xx, π, π«Ά) are common between friends, especially in the UK and Australia. They usually mean affection, not romance.
- Timing speaks too, but everyoneβs busy. A slow reply usually just means life happened.
